Caption Text

 


Part 1

A. DEFINITION

A caption is a short text above or below an image in a book, magazine, or newspaper that describes the image or explains what the person in it did or said.
Caption in the form of additional information which is usually located under the image or photo. Usually the caption only consists of a few words or sentences. Captions can be found in magazines, books, television, social media, and the internet.

B. Social function

Namely to provide basic information about an object. Even though it's short, writing a caption can't be arbitrary. It takes language that is interesting but still informative so that what is in the picture can be conveyed properly.

C. STRUCTURE

Caption writing structure is not written arbitrarily. There is a structure for writing captions so that what is in the picture is conveyed properly, namely: 
  • Opening: The opening is usually written in a larger size to attract the attention of the reader. 
  • Content: Content contains concise information to explain the image. 
  • Closing: The closing part is usually in the form of additional information that has not been conveyed in the content.

D. LINGUISTIC ELEMENT

The linguistic element of the caption In order to be informative, the caption should be written in simple present tense and sentences that are simple and easy to understand.

E. CHARACTERISTIC

There are also characteristics of caption text that are rarely known by people. Among them are:

  • Short text
  • Free to use any tenses
  • Does not explain the image that is clearly visible
  • No name unless required
  • Can contain motivation, gossip, advice and other

TIPS TO WRITE CAPTIONS:

  • Do not begin with the words a, an, or the.
  • Use present tense to describe action in a photo.
  • Give readers information they cannot get from just looking at a photo.
  • A caption should complete the photo. The reader should not have to look at the story, but         should want to look at the story.
  • Write captions so they go from specific to general or general to specific.
  • Do not begin a caption with names.
  • When identifying members of a group, write “from left,” not “from left to right.”
  • “Above” and “pictured here” are unnecessary.
  • Captions should not repeat information contained in the lead.
  • Name people only if they are important to the picture.
