Part 1

News Item Text is a type of writing that provides up-to-date information about events that are important to report.

News Item Text aims to provide information to readers or listeners.

The characteristics of news item text:

Using action verbs or dynamic verbs (verbs that show activity).
Dominant uses saying verbs.
Using adverb of place, adverb of time, and adverb of manner.

News source:

Most people agree that the purpose of the news media - newspapers, magazines, radio and television - is to inform, to educate and to entertain. However, the purpose of the news itself is to inform and to educate your readers, listeners or viewers.

Structure of Nesw Item:

Headline contains the title of a news
News media is a medium from which news is obtained
Date and Place is the date and time of the event or the time the news was published
Newsworthy event is tells the event in a summary form
Background Events is ellaborate what happened, tell what caused the incident
Sources, comments by participants, witnesses, authorities, and experts involved in the event.

A. Headline Definition

There is something important in a news, namely the headline (Title News) either in writing that you find in newspapers or conveyed by readers news as news headlines. Headlines are like short descriptions that help agents tell you the best features of each property. Headlines are located at the very top, and are the first thing readers see.

B. Headline Function

The function of the headline is to attract the interest of the target reader to read the contents of the advertisement, news, or article to the end. A good headline is aimed at a specific target or market prospect. Headlines must also identify the product or brand from the content, so that readers can associate the two.

C. Create Headlines

How to make a good headline:

1. Use numbers and data

2. Give reasons

3. Headlines in the form of questions or feedback to readers

4. Do not use sentences that are too long

Visitors to the park have to register with their addresses, making it easy for rangers to track them down if they leave rubbish behind.
Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa posted pictures of litter collected in cardboard parcels ready to be shipped on his Facebook account.
"Your trash - we'll send it back to you," the post warns, reminding people that littering in a national park is an offence and punishable with up to five years in prison and hefty fines.
the box in the Facebook post contains a polite note saying: "You forgot these things at Khao Yai National Park".
Park authorities say the rubbish left behind can be particularly dangerous for animals who may try to eat it.

Girl's kiss saves life of stranger
Teeenager became famous overnight in China when she saved a suicidal stranger - by kissing him on the lips.
Liu Wenxiu, 19, was shopping with a friend at a mall in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, when she saw a crowd of people watching a man hanging on to the barrier of the highest floor.
"The young man was on the outside of the barrier and was holding a knife to his chest but nobody seemed to be trying to talk him round," she said.
"I wanted to help him but the police wouldn't let me through so I lied and told them he was my boyfriend and that he wanted to kill himself because of me.
"They let me talk to him and he told me he was sad because he was from a broken family. I'm also from a broken family too and understood him perfectly."
Liu then surprised everyone - especially the young man - by stepping forward, putting her arms around him and giving him a kiss.

A fireman took advantage of the distraction and dashed forward to grab hold of the man and pull him to safety.
"His story touched me, and I felt like I really was his girlfriend and I could help him," said Liu afterwards.

Generic Structure of News Item

• Main Events / Newsworthy event(s): it recounts the event in summary form.

• Elaboration / Background event(s): they elaborate what happened, to whom, in what circumstance

• Resource of Information (Source) : it contains comments by participants in, witnesses to and authorities expert on the event

Language Feature of News Item

• Focusing on circumstances (using a simple language in writing the text)

• Using saying verbs: “....”, She said, informed, told, reported.

• Sometimes at the beginning of news, the scene is mentioned : Jakarta – ... .. / London-/Bogor-

• Using Past tense in explaining news events. But if it is a fact that until now still happen or still in the form of fact, then can use simple present tense.

• Short, telegraphic information about story captured in headline

• Using adverbs: time, place and manner.

• Uses of material processes to retell the event
